Using the Instrument channels

Postby 8kmbhfvks4yg2c36 » Wed Apr 11, 2007 3:10 pm

Hi there.

I have a question :-)
I used AD and made some nice sounding settings. After that i wanted to use some other plugins on the instrument channels. So i routed out all the mics to the instrument channels and it sounded completely different after that.

Why is that? Is it possible that the e.g. snare can't be heared on the overhead mics then anymore? Or something like that?

Basically all i wanted to do was having the exact sound like i had inside the plugin and just add some additional processing on some mics. (e.g. using an SSL EQ on overheads and an UAD compressor on the snare)

Do you know what i mean?

thanks!

By routing for eaxample Overhead to a separate output, you thereby remove it from the internal AD Master (which has insert fx too)..

So that could change the overall sound quite a bit, I think if you do any precessing at all in the Master channel, the sound will change if you route stuff to separate outs. Try turning off all the insert effects on the Master and see if this eliminates the problem!

Alright, cool. I'll try that.

If i route out the other channels (e.g. snare), is it gonna be removed from the overheads too then?
I think this was the first thing i tried...just routing out the snare and it sounded different. Sounded a bit like it's not on the room/overhead channels anymore. Quite dry...

The channels handles the "microphones" on the kit. So if you route the Snare channel to a sep out, it is only the close mics of the snare.
And as all Kitpieces, it also goes into Overhead and Room, which of course is a big part of the sound. Mixingdrums is complicated.. So that's why we put all the FX inside AD :)

Yeah :-) I thought that. Maybe i did something wrong then or my system was fucked up.
Because as far as i remember, made a whole setting inside AD and just pressed that little arrow-button on the snare and it sounded different.
It was just the snare routed out and no FX yet on the instrument channel (in the DAW).
Can that be?

As far as i understand it, this should change the sound then, right?

Yes if AD's master channel (the internal AD effects) is processing the sound in any way, and you remove the Snare from that and instead feed it to a channel in your DAW, the overall sound will change. If there is no processing at all going on on the AD Master channel, there shouldn't be a change.. I think :)

Ah! Ok. Got you ;-)
This could have been the problem then. A cool feature could for the next version of AD could be to route the DAW channels back into AD to the master channel if needed :-)

How is the weather in Stockholm? Summer already? Coming up in 3 weeks! :-)

I don't think that is technically possible unfortunately.. all sorts of latency compensation stuff that would mess things up also. But on the good side: Yes, the weather is fantastic today, just had an ice cream in the sun! :)
