FAQ
PRESALE
"The full version contains over 3000 midifiles", could you be a little more specific?
- Over 130 2-bar PopRock "beats" in 4/4, 6/8 and 3/4 with both swing and straight feel. These are the "standard" type beats varying from simple "bread and butter" beats to more advanced rythms. Each beat has over 20 different variations (16th, 8th, 4th, closed hihat, open hihat, ride, bell, cowbell etc.) that lets you alter the sound of the beat.
- Over 100 4-bar "grooves". The grooves are twice as long as the "beats" and are divided into many different styles such as funk, reggae, hardrock and jazz.
- 25 "songs" in many different styles and tempos consisting of a total of 16 bars with "verse", "bridge", "chorus" and "middleeight" variations. These are meant to be "finished" arrangements that you can use to get started fast on a song or get inspiration. You can use the whole "song" as it is or pick out the parts you want to use.
- Over 500 fills, with both straight and swing feel, in different lenghts and styles including funk, rock, and hardrock. - All in all you get a total of 3600 midifiles, ready to drag and drop into your arrangements.
"The full version contains over 3000 midifiles", how will I find what I'm looking for?
You can use the search options, for example to search for files with timesign 4/4, and in category "Hard Rock" only.
You can also use the text search. If you for instance know that you would like to use a 16th Ride beat with ghostnotes you simply type "16 ride ghostnotes" and you will get all the beats that fits your search.

INSTALLATION
How do I install Addictive Drums on a secondary hard drive?
On PC:
Simply install Addictive Drums on that disk.
On Mac:
You can use unix filesystem links to move the samples directory.
Follow these steps:
- Move the folder "/Library/Application Support/Addictive Drums/Sound Data" to your preferred location. (By dragging it in finder and holding down the command button)
- Open a terminal window, and write "ln -s ". (note that the first letter is a lowercase L, not an uppercase i and also note the space at the end) but do not press return just yet...
- Drag the moved folder "Sound Data" (from its new location) and drop it on the terminal window. (this will paste the text of the path)
- Select and copy the following string, (including the space in the beginning):
- Paste the text into the terminal window and press return. Done!
Explanation and undo: What you do with "ln -s" is telling osx to create a "symbolic link" to your new location from the original. After step 5, if you for instance browse in the finder, it will appear as that the soundfile(s) exists in both places. To remove the symbolic link, paste this into the terminal and press return:
Then move the "Sound Data" back to it's original location. ( /Library/Application Support/Addictive Drums/ )
What happens with the demo version and my presets when I install the full version of AD?
The full version replaces the demo. The demo sounds are taken from the full product, so any preset made with the demo will sound exactly the same in the full version.
How do I uninstall the Modern Jazz - Brushes trial?
PC
Delete the "ADpak - Modern Jazz - Brushes" folders from these paths:
C:\Program Files\XLN Audio\Addictive Drums\Sound Data
C:\Program Files\XLN Audio\Addictive Drums\Factory Presets

If you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, the correct Program Files folder will be labeled "Program Files (x86)"
MAC
Delete the "ADpak - Modern Jazz - Brushes" folders from these paths:
-Macintosh HD-/Library/Application Support/Addictive Drums/Sound Data
-Macintosh HD-/Library/Application Support/Addictive Drums/Factory Presets
Please note that this is NOT the same path as the similar one in your User Library.
My host won't recognize Addictive Drums after I installed the latest update
Running the installer from within the zip file has been known to cause this problem, so please try extracting the files from the zip file and then run the installer. Right-click on the installer zip file and choose "Extract All..." to extract the files to a folder.

LOADING ADDICTIVE DRUMS
Where is the startup icon for Addictive Drums?
Addictive Drums is a Virtual Instrument plugin, and can't be run as a "standalone" software (that's why there's no startup icon for it). You load it into a host software such as Cubase/Logic/ProTools etc. See a complete list of supported hosts here: System Requirements
I'm having problems using AD in Digital Performer
RTAS: Using the RTAS version of AD in Digital Performer, with DigiDesign's DAE and Digi hardware, is currently not supported. This issue is being investigated, but we currently do not know when it will be resolved. Using DP with the AU version (or Pro Tools with the RTAS version) of AD works fine.
I can't find Addictive Drums in Pro Tools
Make sure that you have created a Stereo Instrument track. If you load a Mono Instrument Track, Addictive Drums won't show up in the list.
How to load Addictive Drums in all supported hosts
I can't find Addictive Drums in Logic 9, 64-bit mode
Currently there is no 64-bit version of Addictive Drums, but it should be possible to get Addictive Drums up and running in the 64-bit version of Logic 9 by following these steps:
- 1. Start Logic in 32-bit mode.
- 2. Go to the Logic Pro menu -> Preferences -> Audio Units manager...
- 3. Select Addictive Drums in the list and click "Reset and rescan selection"
- 4. Start Logic in 64-bit mode and try loading Addictive Drums. You can find it in the 32-bit plug-ins menu.

I have two computers. Can I install Addictive Drums on both of them?
Yes. According to the license agreement you're allowed to have two active authorizations at the same time for a single license. You authorize the second computer like the first - just make sure to use the same account as the first time (your license is tied to it).
What happens if I use up both my authorizations?
You can manage your authorizations on the Licenses page in your account. Delete old authorizations that you no longer use. This will allow for new authorizations for new or re-installed computers.
I had authorized AD before, but now it's suddenly deauthorized. What happened?
The computer ID used in the authorization process is based on different hardware and software specifications in your computer. There must be something in your computer that changed the computer ID, and thereby removing the authorization. Maybe you are using multiple hard drives, or have made a large update of hardware or software lately?
Log-in to your account and go to the Licenses page. Click Remove next to the authorization(s) that is no longer working. Then create a new authorization with the new computer ID.
I want to sell my XLN Audio products. Are license transfers allowed?
Yes. Here's how you do it: Uninstall Addictive Drums and any expansions and log-in to your xlnaudio.com account. Go to the Licenses page and click "Remove Computer" next to all your authorizations. Tell the buyer to create an account with us and give us his/her e-mail address. After that we will transfer the licenses to the new owners account.
I no longer have access to the e-mail address used in my account
If you still have the password to your account, you can log-in and change the e-mail address yourself. If not, please contact us through the form on this page and we will help you.
Where can I find the Computer ID?
The Computer ID is generated by Addictive Drums, so you need to load Addictive Drums in your host and click the "Authorize!" button. This will give you the Computer ID, along with step-by-step instructions on how to authorize.
USING ADDICTIVE DRUMS
Where is the manual?
Addictive drums does not ship with a printed manual, but in the user interface click on the [?] button in the top-right corner. A popup menu appears, from which you can open the manual (and the AD keymap) OR, try these links:
- Addictive Drums manual v1.5 (English)
- Addictive Drums manual v1.0 (French)
I only see a couple of hundred grooves on the BEATS page. Where can I find the rest?
The items in the Beats list are not single grooves, but groove categories. Click the white arrow next to a groove to unfold all variations of that groove.
When I click the up/down arrows I only get a couple of presets. Where can I find the rest?
Click on the preset name ("Startup" by default). This will unfold a menu that contains all preset categories.
Where are the faders for ride and cymbals?
Faders for all kitpieces can be find on the KIT page.
Why are the faders for ride and cymbals not in the bottom mixer section?
The faders in the bottom mixer section controls the mic-levels. Rides and cymbals does not have dedicated mics. However, you still have quite good control since all KitPieces have levels for how much of the recorded sound that should be passed (or "bled") to the OH and Room channels. If you for instance need a very near and dry sound, you could use the OH as the near channel for Cym/Ride, and then turn the OH-bleed levels to zero for the rest of the KitPieces.
Is there a way to copy parts of presets, like only the snare?
Yes. On the EDIT page you can copy and paste sampler and inserts settings separately, using The [C] and [P] buttons.
Does AD support multiple outputs?
Yes. Every channel in the AD mixer can be routed as a separate out. It is then excluded from the AD Master-channel. (However, you can send it to the bus-channel if you need the sound to go both ways).
How to use separate outputs in Addictive Drums
How can I send the individual channels in Addictive Drums to separate tracks in my host (multiple outputs)?
Here's the link to a document that guides you through using separate outputs with Addictive Drums in all supported host softwares:
How to use separate outputs in Addictive Drums
Is there a way to change currently selected beat from a midikey?
No, not in the current version of Addictive Drums.
Does AD "humanize" midi patterns?
All sounds in AD are recorded with alternating strokes for each velocity layer, thus eliminating the "machine-gun" effect. In Addictive Drums v1.5 Adrenaline it's also possible to adjust veclocity ranges and decrease dynamics through the Beat Transformer tool.
Does AD have support for GM-mapping?
Yes, simply choose the GM Map Preset on the BEATS page. Make sure that you have the latest version of Addictive Drums installed, since this feature was added in version 1.5.
Does AD support custom MIDI remapping?
Yes, both the full and demo version of Addictive Drums v1.5 Adrenaline features E-drum support with custom MIDI remapping.
Can I load my own samples in AD?
No, not in the current version of Addictive Drums.

Fatal error writing ADDrop.mid at...
PC:
The fatal error most likely depends on one of two things:
1. You are running Vista or Windows 7 and you need to run your host software as an administrator to make it work. Try right-clicking on the host software icon to get the option to run it as administrator.
2. You have Kaspersky or perhaps another anti-virus program that stops Addictive Drums from writing to the ADDrop.mid file. Try adding your host software as an exception in the anti-virus program.
MAC:
This is most likely a problem with file permissions. Please try the following:
1. Open Finder and go to: /Users/your_osx_username/Library/Application Support (Please note that this path is NOT the same as the similar path in your hard drive root: -Macintosh HD-/Library/Application Support/).
2. Right click or CTRL click on the Addictive Drums folder and choose "Get Info".
3. In the bottom of the window that pops up, make sure that the drop down boxes says "Read & Write". You might need to click the icon with a lock on it and type your password to be able to change the permissions.
4. Click "Apply to enclosed items..." That should do the trick.

COMPUTER RESOURCES
What sample format does AD use?
All sounds in AD are recorded, edited and mixed at 24 bit/96 kHz. They are then converted to our own format, which is 44.1 kHz and uses variable bitdepth, which is very effective on percussive sounds. Our compression algorithm is virtually lossless, and the signal to noise ratio is around 140db, equivalent of 24-bit resolution.
Does AD stream samples from the harddrive?
Samples are initially streamed from disk until they are fully loaded and reside safely in RAM. This may put a little more strain on your harddrive when you switch presets, but after a few seconds the pressure eases and the drive is entirely free to serve your audio tracks. This solution enables quick preset previewing without sacrificing valuable harddrive bandwidth once you have chosen your preset.
How much memory does a complete AD kit need?
A full kit uses about 400-700 MB of RAM, but it is strongly recommended to get yourself at least 1.5 GB or more of RAM. All audio computers like lots of RAM, and besides Addictive Drums you have the OS, host application and other plug-ins usually wanting a few hundred megabytes as well.
How many velocity layers does AD have?
AD uses about 12-16 layers, combined with lots of alternating samples. We did a lot of research before we built the AD sound library, and found that alternating samples is of much greater importance than very high number of layers. Of course you need enough layers "vertically" to cover the change in sound from soft to hard strokes. But more importantly we've added samples "horizontally", providing alternating samples in each layer. So hitting the snare at velocity 110 repeatedly (like in a typical song) always gives you 5-6 different samples. Same with closed hihat, it needs alternating samples to sound realistic. We have alternating samples throughout AD, even in the cymbal chokes.
